This article from The Guardian, about the effort underway in Congress to get rid of so-called "pro-homosexual" literature, is rather alarming.
Bush is interested in [Gerald] Allen's opinions because Allen is an elected Republican representative in the Alabama state legislature. He is Bush's base. Last week, Bush's base introduced a bill that would ban the use of state funds to purchase any books or other materials that "promote homosexuality". Allen does not want taxpayers' money to support "positive depictions of homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle". That's why Tennessee Williams and Alice Walker have got to go.
Funny that this drive comes from conservative Republicans, who supposedly believe in letting the markets, as well as local jurisdictions, work their magic. If it's offensive, wouldn't local school districts be able to handle it just fine? That seems to be the argument when it comes to teaching creationism, but not in this case.
