Friday was a banner day for civil liberties. The NYPD have been conducting random bag checks at subway stations for almost a year now, and yesterday I was the lucky target of one of the "random" inspections. Just as I was about to go through the turnstile at the W. 4th street station, a couple of cops yelled out for me to stop, abruptly saying they wanted to look in my bag.
My answer was easy: hell no. Actually I didn't say the "hell" part, but that's how I felt. Call me crazy, but I'm a wee bit uncomfortable with the idea of the police searching one's belongings without a warrant or any reasonable cause whatsoever. The next part was easy too: if you decline the police search, you have to leave that subway station.
So I walked 3 blocks up the street to a different entrance for the same station, which didn't have any police presence. I'm sure a terrorist would never have been able to figure that one out.
Haha

It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.
