The "don't ask, don't tell" policy of keeping gays out of the military never made much sense to me, and now that the military is overstretched and overworked in Iraq, it's even less defensible. Unfortunately, however, "don't ask, don't tell" is still the official military policy, as this article confirms.
According to the government's General Accounting Office, under the policy, which not only bars openly gay men and women from enlisting but also allows the dismissal of current soldiers on the same grounds, 11,000 service members have been dismissed since 1993. The rule has also had a high monetary cost.
